Meghrashen. Rural Women’s Union. Record–Breaking Harvest!
Knarine Ghazanchyan
Training Coordinator
I want to share the story of the Women’s Network project in Shirak region which I have been monitoring lately. Each monitoring is usually done together with the local leader, in this case Gor Petrosyan who is the Deputy Village Mayor of Meghrashen, and at the same time Deputy Head of Shirak Farmers’ Association. We met him in the stock of potatoes carrying out assortment process of the abundant harvest of potatoes together with women who are members of Rural Women’s Union.
Not surprisingly, the people of Meghrashen have recorded a rich harvest of potatoes this year – two thousands of tones of selected potatoes. We were surprised by the size and accurateness of the stock having each sort of potatoes accurately and separately stocked and separated in sacks. Moreover, we were surprised to see so different sort plates such as “Marphona”, “Picasso”, “Amarosa”, “Arnova”; more than 18 sorts of potatoes, Dutch, German and many other sorts inclusive. The majority of women working everywhere were the members of Women’s Union, and many others were beneficiaries of our projects.
“Members of the Association have no free time, summer and winter, let alone in autumn and spring, these are the busiest days, in regard of which national proverb says, “Work a day, live a year”, Gor Petrosyan tells.

“This is not the first year our Farmers’ Association recorded such a good harvest. I have been one of the members of the Association since its foundation; I’m as well a member of Rural Women’s Union. It helped me in every aspect of my life – income, knowledge, communication with interesting people, and what is of upmost importance, Heifer provided a gravid cow last year which has already delivered a beautiful calf, thanks to the God. I will be glad to fulfill my pass–on obligation as time comes. Kindness is mostly important in life. I often share milk that my cow gives with those neighbors who have children and no cow. And for a family of 5 people having a good milking cow is mostly important”, - these are the words of Lilik Aghababyan - a woman farmer from Meghrashen village in Shirak Marz.

After monitoring all ten families Gor added at parting, “Our people are very diligent and in case of an opportunity to work, they do work. That’s why poverty and need gradually disappear from our village”.
